Cromhout House

The Cromhout House is easily identified by its four symmetrical, stately facades lining the Herengracht canal. Built between sixteen sixty and sixteen sixty-two, these structures are defined by their distinctive neck gables, a fashion popularized by the architect Philips Vingboons. A merchant named Jacob Cromhout commissioned this row of houses for his family, choosing an elegant style of Dutch Classicism that signaled his status among the city’s ruling elite.
