The Vrij Paleis at Paleisstraat one hundred and seven occupies a building that once housed the offices of the NRC Handelsblad newspaper. Since the late nineteen seventies, the complex was squatted, eventually evolving into a long-standing artists' stronghold in the heart of Amsterdam. It now operates as an artist-run gallery and creative hub, providing studios, workshops, and exhibition areas for makers working in disciplines ranging from ceramics and metalworking to filmmaking and fashion.
