The Uilenburgersjoel stands on the former island of Uilenburg as one of the few original structures left from Amsterdam’s old Jewish quarter. Built in seventeen sixty-six, this synagogue features a distinct Louis the Fifteenth style of architecture. Its survival through the Second World War was remarkable, as much of the surrounding neighborhood was later demolished for redevelopment, leaving this site isolated behind its high wall and gate.
