Athenaeum Boekhandel is easily identified by its royal blue storefront and the large, curved windows that mark its home on the Spui. Founded in nineteen sixty-six by Johan Polak and Rob van Gennep, the shop occupies a space once used as an art gallery. In those early years, the square itself was a parking lot, but the bookstore grew into a hub for writers, students, and editors, helping to reshape the area into a focal point for the city’s intellectual life.
