The Clayton Hotel Amsterdam American anchors the Leidseplein with a sprawling, turreted facade that echoes the grand scale of a Venetian palace. This building is a prominent example of Art Nouveau, or Jugendstil, architecture, defined by its intricate tracery and decorative masonry. Completed between nineteen hundred and nineteen hundred two, the hotel replaced an earlier structure from eighteen eighty-two that had shared the block with a police station and a firehouse.
