Pingjiang Road runs for about one mile alongside a narrow canal, the Pingjiang River, in the Gusu District of Suzhou. This street is marked by a series of seventeen stone bridges that cross the water and connect to a network of over fifty smaller alleys. The layout of the area follows a plan that has remained consistent since at least the thirteen hundreds, when the city was known as Pingjiang.
