China Kunqu Museum

The China Kunqu Museum is tucked inside the Quanjin Guild Hall, a complex originally built by Shanxi merchants in the nineteenth century. Its most striking feature is a traditional wooden opera stage positioned beneath an elaborately decorated dome, designed to amplify the voices of performers without artificial sound systems. This stage is a rare architectural survival, featuring wood carvings and a caisson ceiling that reflects the acoustic sophistication of the Qing dynasty.
