Lion Grove Garden

landmark

Lion Grove Garden is defined by its massive, complex labyrinth of Taihu limestone rocks that rise into peaks, grottoes, and tunnels. Built in thirteen forty-two during the Yuan Dynasty, the garden began as a retreat for the monk Wen Tianru to honor his teacher, Abbot Zhongfeng. The rocks are arranged to resemble crouching lions, a design choice tied to the garden's Buddhist origins, as the stone forms were intended to mirror the imagery of the Lion's Roar Sutra.
