The Nişantaşı neighborhood takes its name from these marble pillars, known as nişan taşları, or target stones. You can identify them by their tall, slender, and rectangular forms, often topped with decorative finials and engraved with Ottoman calligraphy. These markers were historically erected to commemorate remarkable archery shots made by Ottoman sultans during practice sessions in this formerly wooded area.
