Canonbury Tower is a six-storey structure of red brick that rises above the surrounding Victorian streets, marked by its flat roof and origins as a rural retreat. Built between fifteen oh nine and fifteen thirty-two for the Augustinian canons of St Bartholomew's Priory, it remains the oldest building in Islington. The name Canonbury reflects this monastic heritage, meaning the burgh of the canons.
