Waikiki Wall

The Waikiki Wall is a long, concrete structure that juts into the ocean like a pier, marking the boundary where Kuhio Beach meets the open waters of Waikiki. Built in nineteen fifty-one, it was originally named the Kapahulu Groin. Engineers designed the structure to act as a giant sand catcher, holding over one hundred thousand cubic yards of imported sand in place to stabilize a shoreline that had been steadily eroding since the early twentieth century.
