Duke Paoa Kahanamoku Statue

A nine-foot tall bronze figure stands on Kūhiō Beach, arms wide open toward the street, with a tall surfboard positioned directly behind him. This is the statue of Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, a Native Hawaiian who became an internationally celebrated Olympic swimmer and the person widely credited with popularizing the sport of surfing around the world during the early twentieth century.
