Ballou Hall is a rectangular, three-story building constructed of red brick and sandstone that stands at the highest point of Walnut Hill. Designed by architect Gridley J. F. Bryant, the structure is crowned by a bracketed cornice and balustrade, with a Roman Ionic portico at its main entrance. Completed in eighteen fifty-four, it served as the original academic building for Tufts College, housing the entire university in its early years.
