Old Powder House

The Old Powder House is a thick-walled stone tower, shaped like a bullet, that sits on Quarry Hill. Originally built as a windmill around seventeen oh four by a French Protestant shipbuilder named Jean Mallet, the structure was repurposed in seventeen forty-seven by the Massachusetts Bay Colony to serve as a magazine for gunpowder. Because the tower possessed walls two feet thick, it was considered a secure place to store the largest supply of gunpowder in the colony.
