Strivers' Row is defined by rows of ornate townhouses that feature private carriage alleys tucked between the buildings. These alleyways, still marked by historic signs instructing visitors to walk their horses, reveal the original purpose of the blocks, which were built as the King Model Houses between eighteen ninety-one and eighteen ninety-three. Developer David H. King Junior intended the development for wealthy white New Yorkers, commissioning three architectural firms to design the homes in neo-Italian Renaissance, Georgian, and Federal styles.
