The Abyssinian Baptist Church is defined by its stone, neo-Gothic facade featuring pointed arches and imported stained glass windows. Established in eighteen oh eight, it began as a protest against racially segregated seating at the First Baptist Church in lower Manhattan. A group of African Americans and Ethiopian sea merchants walked out, naming their new congregation after Abyssinia, the ancient name for Ethiopia, to honor their heritage.
