The Harlem YMCA at one hundred eighty West One Hundred Thirty-Fifth Street is an eleven-story building of red brick, designed with neo-Georgian details. Constructed between nineteen thirty-one and nineteen thirty-two, it was built to provide safe and affordable housing for African American men and boys during an era of strict racial segregation. Funding for the project came from sources including John D. Rockefeller Junior and Julius Rosenwald, helping to create what was then the largest and best-equipped facility of its kind in the United States.
