De Garre is a narrow, dimly lit alley tucked between the Grote Markt and Burg square. Its name is West Flemish for crack or crevice, a fitting description for a passage so narrow that two people walking arm in arm often struggle to pass. The alley was once a medieval fire lane, designed to provide the city with quick access to the canals to douse flames.
