Kustaanmiekka Fortification

historic

The Kustaanmiekka fortification is defined by its thick, sea-facing stone ramparts and massive, nineteenth-century Russian artillery guns that remain positioned on the grassy embankments. Once a separate island, this southern point of the Suomenlinna fortress complex contains the most concentrated defensive structures of the entire archipelago. It sits directly beside the Kustaanmiekka strait, an eighty-one-meter-wide channel that serves as the essential gateway for large ships entering Helsinki’s South Harbor.
