The Suomenlinna Church sits at the highest point of the island of Iso Mustasaari, distinguished by its square tower that serves as an active lighthouse for sea and air traffic. Originally completed in eighteen fifty-four, the building was designed by Konstantin Thon as an Eastern Orthodox garrison church dedicated to Saint Alexander Nevsky. At that time, it featured five iconic blue onion domes and rich decorations to serve the Russian troops stationed within the sea fortress.
