Suomenlinna is a chain of interconnected islands guarded by massive stone walls and bastions that emerge directly from the rugged, rocky shoreline. Built beginning in seventeen forty-eight by the Swedish crown, this maritime fortification was designed to be a grand defensive naval base, shielding the eastern border of the Swedish Empire from Russian expansion. It relies on the classic star-shaped layout, with layers of defensive stonework adapted to the uneven terrain of the Baltic skerries.
