The Carrières neighborhood takes its name from the limestone quarries that defined life along this stretch of the Seine and Marne rivers for centuries. Starting in the twelfth century, workers extracted stone here for major construction projects, including local churches and fortifications. This extraction eventually moved underground, creating a network of tunnels that supported the growing industry of Paris.
