Lac Daumesnil is defined by two artificial islands, Reuilly and Bercy, that sit within its twelve hectares of water. These islands, connected to each other and the shore by suspension bridges, were created in eighteen sixty as part of a sweeping redesign of the Bois de Vincennes under Napoleon the Third and Baron Haussmann. The engineer Jean-Charles Adolphe Alphand oversaw the construction, intending to give the working-class residents of eastern Paris a green space that mirrored the aristocratic landscape of the Bois de Boulogne.
