The Musée national de l'histoire de l'immigration is housed within the Palais de la Porte Dorée, a massive Art Deco landmark recognizable by the one thousand one hundred and thirty square meters of sculpted bas-reliefs covering its facade. These stone carvings by Alfred Auguste Janniot depict ships, oceans, and wildlife, originally designed to celebrate the reach of the French colonial empire during the nineteen thirty-one International Colonial Exhibition.
