The Petite Ceinture of the twentieth arrondissement is marked by segments of original steel rails and wooden ties embedded in a landscape where wild grasses, forest seedlings, and mature trees have overtaken the industrial corridor. This thirty-two kilometer circular railway was constructed between eighteen fifty-two and eighteen sixty-nine to connect Paris's major train stations and supply the city's military fortifications.
