Père Lachaise Cemetery is marked by its vast, rolling hillside landscape, where thousands of stone mausoleums, Gothic crypts, and tree-lined cobblestone paths create the appearance of a silent, miniature city. Established in eighteen hundred and four, the site is named after Père François de La Chaise, the Jesuit priest who served as confessor to King Louis the Fourteenth and once maintained a retreat on this very hill.
