Long ago, the island belonged to the abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, and for centuries it remained a quiet space used for grazing cattle. During the nineteenth century, it gained popularity as a weekend getaway for Parisians who came to swim, canoe, and dance in the riverside guinguettes.
