Accra Sports Stadium

stadium

The Accra Sports Stadium is identifiable by its large, forty-thousand-capacity concrete structure, which sits as a major landmark in downtown Accra. Inaugurated in nineteen sixty-two with a match between Accra Eleven and Kumasi Eleven, the stadium was designed by architects Alexander Barov and Mrs. Lomax. While it serves as the home ground for prominent football clubs like Hearts of Oak, the venue has faced significant public debate regarding its name. It was renamed the Ohene Djan Stadium in two thousand four to honor Ghana’s first Director of Sports, a move that met resistance from the Ga people who preferred the original title. After years of controversy, the name reverted to the Accra Sports Stadium.
