Girgaon Chowpatty is a wide, crescent-shaped expanse of sand that marks the northern edge of the Marine Drive promenade. The name itself comes from the Marathi words for four channels or creeks, and the beach sits at the base of Malabar Hill. While today it is known for its food stalls and evening crowds, the beach once served as a primary site for the Indian independence movement. Figures like Mahatma Gandhi and Lokmanya Tilak held large nationalist rallies on these sands to challenge British rule.
