SHRI Mumbai Panjrapole

The Shri Mumbai Panjrapole, located in the Bhuleshwar area, is a two-acre animal sanctuary hidden within a dense maze of streets. While the modern facility is home to hundreds of cows, pigeons, and other animals, its origins lie in a nineteenth-century crisis. In eighteen thirty-two, British authorities in Bombay ordered a shoot-at-sight policy to control the city's stray dog and pig populations. The resulting public outcry and riots led businessmen Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy and Amichand Shah to negotiate a different solution with the governor.
