The Liberty Cinema at Marine Lines is a striking Art Deco building marked by a distinctive tower rising at the street corner, designed to draw attention despite the tight space of its surroundings. Founded by Habib Hoosein, the theater was named to commemorate India’s independence on August fifteenth, nineteen forty-seven, the same year its foundation was laid. It opened to the public in March nineteen forty-nine with the film Andaz, establishing itself as a premier venue for Hindi cinema.
