The Hawa Mahal is a five-story wall of pink sandstone that rises in a jagged, honeycomb-like façade of nine hundred and fifty-three small, latticed windows. Built in seventeen ninety-nine by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, the structure acts as a monumental screen rather than a traditional residence or castle. Its architect, Lal Chand Ustad, designed the building to lean at an eighty-seven-degree angle, allowing the massive, thin exterior to remain stable without a conventional foundation.
