Okochi Sanso Garden

Okochi Sanso Garden is defined by a large black entrance gate that marks the transition from the bustling bamboo forest of Arashiyama into a quiet, twenty-thousand-square-meter hillside estate. This garden was the private residence of Denjiro Okochi, a famous Showa-era film star known for his roles in samurai dramas. Starting in the mid-nineteen-twenties, when he was thirty-four years old, Okochi spent three decades meticulously designing and constructing this complex on the southern slopes of Mount Ogura.
