Tenryu-ji

Tenryu-ji stands in the Arashiyama district as a sprawling Zen complex defined by its fourteenth-century landscape garden, which retains its original design despite the repeated fires that have leveled the temple buildings over the centuries. The site was once an imperial villa where Emperor Go-Daigo was raised. After his death in thirteen thirty-nine, the shogun Ashikaga Takauji founded this temple to honor his former rival’s spirit and appease his memory.
