Adashino Nenbutsuji Temple is defined by the sight of approximately eight thousand stone statues and pagodas packed into a dedicated area of its grounds known as Sai no Kawara. These weathered markers were once scattered across the surrounding hills, which served for centuries as a site where the dead were left exposed to the elements. During the early nineteen hundreds, residents collected these scattered stones and arranged them together to memorialize those who had passed away without kin to care for their graves.
