Hatonomori Hachiman Shrine

religious

Hatonomori Hachiman Shrine is marked by the presence of a miniature, six-meter-tall replica of Mount Fuji rising from the ground. Known as a fujizuka, this mound was constructed in seventeen eighty-nine for commoners who could not make the arduous journey to the real mountain. It is the oldest surviving example in Tokyo and remains a site where visitors can perform a ritual climb, following a path to a summit marked by stones taken from the actual Mount Fuji.
