The bronze statue of a seated Akita dog stands in the plaza at the Hachiko Exit of Shibuya Station. It commemorates Hachiko, an Akita born in nineteen twenty-three who was adopted by Professor Hidesaburo Ueno. For nearly two years, Hachiko walked to the station every day to greet the professor after his commute. When the professor died suddenly in nineteen twenty-five, Hachiko returned to this same spot to wait for him every evening for the next nine years.
