Shibuya Center-Gai Street

Shibuya Center-Gai is a narrow, pedestrian-heavy corridor that pushes west from the Shibuya Scramble Crossing. It is recognizable by the dense, multi-layered verticality of its signage, where shops, karaoke boxes, and izakayas are stacked floor upon floor, crowding the streetscape. The area occupies land that was once the site of the Udagawa River. In nineteen twenty-nine, the river was diverted into underground culverts to create a road, forming the foundation of the district’s modern development.
