The Yoyogi National Stadium 1st Gymnasium is defined by its sweeping, curved roof that appears to drape like a giant tent over the site. Designed by architect Kenzo Tange and engineer Yoshikatsu Tsuboi, the arena is built around a central spine of two massive steel cables stretched between reinforced concrete towers. This system allows the roof to hang without any interior columns, creating a vast, unobstructed space that was the largest of its kind when completed in nineteen sixty-four.
