Asakura Museum of Sculpture

The Asakura Museum of Sculpture stands out as an imposing three-story structure of black reinforced concrete, a deliberate contrast to the traditional wooden homes of the surrounding Yanaka district. This building was the personal residence and studio of Fumio Asakura, a sculptor often called the Rodin of Japan. After moving to the area in nineteen oh seven, Asakura designed and expanded this site over decades, integrating his private living quarters with a workshop where he trained pupils in his school of naturalistic realism.
