Ueno Toshogu Shrine

Ueno Toshogu Shrine stands out for the brilliance of its gold-leaf-covered buildings and a long path lined with hundreds of stone and bronze lanterns. This seventeenth-century Shinto shrine was first established in sixteen twenty-seven to honor Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, and was later rebuilt in sixteen fifty-one by his grandson, the third shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. It was designed to serve as a place of worship for pilgrims who could not travel to the more remote shrine in Nikko.
