The Eastern & Oriental Hotel is recognizable by its white, sprawling facade stretching along the George Town waterfront, anchored by a prominent dome that rises above its colonial-style architecture. Established in eighteen eighty-five by the Armenian Sarkies brothers, the hotel was created to provide grand, luxury accommodations for the increasing number of globetrotters arriving in Penang. By combining two separate properties, the Eastern and the Oriental, the brothers established what was once branded as The Premier Hotel East of Suez.
