The Cenotaph on the Esplanade is a granite monument rising from the seawall, recognizable by its tapered form and its role as an empty tomb for soldiers whose graves are elsewhere. Built in nineteen twenty-nine to honor servicemen from Penang who died during the First World War, it serves as the focal point for annual Remembrance Day ceremonies.
