The marble statue of Queen Victoria occupies the center of Republic Square, positioned directly in front of the National Library. You can identify her by the intricate shawl carved across her lap, a detail representing the Maltese lace she famously ordered in bulk to support the island’s local craftspeople. Sicilian sculptor Giuseppe Valenti finished the monument in eighteen ninety-one to commemorate the Queen's Golden Jubilee, placing her on a pedestal that includes bronze coats of arms for both Britain and Malta.
