Shanhu Lake is defined by the Sun and Moon Pagodas, a pair of towers that rise directly from the water in the center of the city. The lake takes its name from the Chinese fir trees that grow along its banks, serving as a quiet counterpart to the city’s bustling thoroughfares. This water system originated as a man-made moat during the Tang and Song dynasties, later expanding into an inner lake that became a focal point for the residences of prominent local officials and intellectuals.
