Plac Nowy Targ is one of the three historic market squares of the Wrocław Old Town, distinguished by a distinct grid pattern visible in its paving. First mentioned in twelve sixty-six, the site evolved from a medieval center of commerce where merchants traded goods for centuries. In seventeen thirty-two, a baroque fountain featuring a statue of Neptune was installed here, which locals famously nicknamed Gabeljürgen, or George with a pitchfork.
