Umschlagplatz Monument

The Umschlagplatz Monument on Stawki Street is a stark, rectangular, white-walled enclosure that resembles an open freight car. Its design features a distinct black horizontal stripe along the front, intended to evoke the appearance of a Jewish ritual prayer shawl. Unveiled in April nineteen eighty-eight, the structure surrounds a small, open-air area where, from nineteen forty-two to nineteen forty-three, German authorities assembled over three hundred thousand Jewish residents of the Warsaw Ghetto for deportation to the Treblinka extermination camp.
