Iziko South African Museum

The Iziko South African Museum is distinguished by its grand, Victorian-era architecture nestled within the historic Company’s Garden. Founded in eighteen twenty-five by Lord Charles Somerset, it holds the title of the oldest museum in the country. What began as a cabinet of curiosities, filled with rare specimens to satisfy colonial fascination, has evolved into a sprawling institution housing over one million scientific specimens.
