Bo-Kaap is defined by its rows of brightly painted, flat-roofed houses and steep, narrow streets climbing the lower slopes of Signal Hill. Established in the seventeen sixties by Dutch colonist Jan de Waal, the area began as a collection of modest rental houses called huurhuisjes. These homes were leased to enslaved people brought to the Cape from Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka, and parts of Africa.
