Mutual Heights, on the corner of Darling and Parliament Streets, is identifiable by its stepped, ziggurat-style silhouette and the distinctive prismoid windows that project from its granite-clad facade. Opened in nineteen forty as the headquarters for the South African Mutual Life Assurance Society, it stood for a time as the tallest building in Africa. Architects Louw and Louw, alongside Frederick McIntosh Glennie, designed the structure to embody corporate strength, drawing inspiration from the art deco skylines of New York and Los Angeles.
